Francophone enseignant en anglais à Montréal, grande ville multiculturelle et multiethnique, j’ai toujours été attiré par le terrain fertile des échanges entre les cultures et les possibilités d’innovation qu’ils offrent. La découverte de nouvelles façons de représentés les réalités jaillit souvent du choc des cultures et des imaginaires venant d’ailleurs. J’y puise une de mes principales sources d’inspiration.

J'ai adopté le tapis crocheté comme médium d'expression dans un milieu urbain comme Montréal à cause du peu d'équipement requis et des possibilités de récupérer ou de recycler les vieux tissus.

Being a francophone in Québec and teaching in English in Montréal, a multicultural and multiethnic metropolis, I was always attracted to cross-cultural representations and the fertile and exciting possibilities that contacts with others may bring. Finding new ways of representing realities often comes from the contacts with peoples from other places, speaking different languages and relating to each other in original and different ways. The rugs I have hooked have influences from far away places or times: Asia, North American Indians, and Pre-Colombian Civilizations. These are all-important sources of images, meaning and most importantly, dreamscapes.

I have adopted Rug Hooking in an urban setting like Montreal because it requires very little equipment while offering the possibility to re-use or recycle textiles and fabrics.

Originaire du Cap Breton en Nouvelle Écosse, où les tapis crochetés étaient dans toutes les pièces, Tony fait parti de la quatrième génération d’une longue lignée de tapissiers. Il est praticien de cet art textile depuis une dizaine d’années. Il a développé une passion pour la couleur et est devenu un coloriste hors pair lorsqu’il s’immerge dans ses pots de teintures. Instructeur certifié par la Guilde McGown, il maîtrise aussi bien la tapisserie fine que les formes plus populaires du tapis crocheté. Tony offre des cours dans son studio à Montréal ainsi que des ateliers spécialisés a travers le Canada et les États-Unis.

Tony is a fourth generation Rug Hooker, originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where he grew up with hooked rugs everywhere under foot. He has been making fiber art for nearly ten years. Tony has a passion for colour and loves to play in his dye pots. He is a McGown certified instructor. He is skilled in all aspects of rug hooking from fine shading to primitives. Tony teaches classes in his home studio, as well as workshops in Canada and the US.
